Memory

AI that remembers everything: what exists today, honestly

Nothing remembers everything. In October 2026 there are four kinds of "AI memory", each remembering a different slice of your life and forgetting the rest.

  • Four kinds exist: chat memory (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini), note-based second brains (Notion AI, Obsidian with plugins, Mem), always-on recorders (the Limitless pendant and the Rewind Mac app, both discontinued in December 2025), and say-it-once assistants (Amili, in private beta).
  • Chat memory keeps a short profile of you, not your conversations. Note tools remember exactly what you wrote and nothing you did not. Recorders captured everything but the leading ones stopped selling or capturing.
  • Prices as of October 2026 range from free (Obsidian, Claude Free, ChatGPT Free) to 29 dollars a month (Mem Pro) and about 19.50 euro per member (Notion Business).
  • The honest answer: pick the kind that matches what you lose most often, and accept that you, not the AI, decide what goes in.

Why "remembers everything" is the wrong question

Every memory product answers a narrower question: everything you typed to it, everything you wrote down, everything you said near a microphone, or everything you told it to keep. The gap between those four is where the disappointment lives. Below is what each kind remembers, forgets, does with your data, and costs, each claim linked to the vendor's page or a dated report.

Kind 1: chat memory (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini)

What it really remembers. A profile, not a transcript. Anthropic's memory help article says Claude "saves memory as a set of individual topics as you chat," covering your role, projects and working style, and declines sensitive topics by default. It is on for Free, Pro and Max. ChatGPT, per Engadget's April 2025 report, keeps saved memories and can reference past chats. Google's Gemini help page says Gemini "learns from past chats" to suggest next steps, if you are 18 or over, use a personal Google account and have Keep Activity on.

What it forgets. Most of what you said. All three choose what to keep. Incognito or temporary chats are excluded. Nothing outside the chat window (your email, your calendar, the thing you said in a meeting) enters at all.

Privacy model. All three let you view and delete entries. Training is a separate setting. Google's Gemini privacy hub states that a subset of chats are reviewed by humans and kept for up to three years disconnected from your account, and that chats are used to improve services including training generative models unless activity is off. Anthropic's consumer training setting is opt-in and changeable.

Price (October 2026). Claude Free 0, Pro 17 dollars a month annual, per claude.com/pricing. ChatGPT Free 0, Go 8, Plus 20 dollars, per OpenAI's pricing docs. Gemini's memory page does not state a plan requirement beyond a personal account.

Kind 2: note-based second brains (Notion AI, Obsidian, Mem)

What it really remembers. Exactly what you put in. Notion AI searches your workspace and connected apps like Slack and Google Drive, per its AI page. Obsidian stores plain Markdown files on your own disk; AI comes from community plugins you install. Mem's homepage says every note, meeting, saved page and connected app "updates Mem Agent's picture of your tasks, projects, and goals."

What it forgets. Anything you did not capture. Mem reduces that with voice capture and meeting transcription, but it still needs you to press the button.

Privacy model. Obsidian is local-first: the files are yours, and plugins are third-party code you choose to trust. Notion and Mem are hosted; Notion advertises zero data retention with model providers only on Enterprise.

Price (October 2026). Obsidian is free for personal use; Sync is 4 dollars a month billed annually, per obsidian.md/pricing. Notion shows Free, Plus at 9.50 euro and Business at 19.50 euro per member per month (full AI only on Business), per notion.com/pricing as displayed to us in the EU. Mem lists Free, Plus at 9 dollars and Pro at 29 dollars a month, per Mem pricing.

Kind 3: always-on recorders (Limitless, Rewind)

This is the kind people mean by "remembers everything," and it is the kind that just ended.

Status. The Limitless homepage now carries an acquisition notice: Limitless has been acquired by Meta. It states the Pendant is no longer sold as of 5 December 2025, that recording through the Desktop and Web apps has stopped, and that "The Rewind app is sunsetting" with all screen and audio capture disabled from 19 December 2025. 9to5Mac's report of the same date adds that service ended immediately in Brazil, China, the EU, Israel, South Korea, Turkey and the UK, and that existing customers get the Unlimited plan free.

What it really remembered. Everything within earshot (Pendant) or everything on screen plus audio (Rewind), transcribed and searchable. The closest any consumer product came to total recall.

What it forgets. Now, everything new. Existing owners can read old recordings through 2026, per the homepage, but cannot make new ones.

Privacy model. The reason this category is hard: recording other people, consent laws, and what happens to years of audio when a company is acquired. The December 2025 notice gave users in excluded regions two weeks to export before deletion.

Price. No longer purchasable, so old prices are not listed.

Kind 4: say-it-once assistants (Amili)

What it really remembers. What you tell it, as structured items. Amili, per its facts page, takes "a sentence, a voice note or a photo" and sorts it into Say, Do (a prioritised task list only you can change) and Know (facts and decisions). It keeps decisions and dates, remembers requests you declined, and only comes back to you when something needs you.

What it forgets. Everything you did not say to it. It does not listen in on meetings, read your screen or scan your inbox. It also does not do deep writing, coding or immediate web tasks, and most integrations (Apple Reminders, Google Tasks, calendars, Jira, Linear) are listed as planned, not working.

Privacy model. Private beta from 14 October 2026 with ten invited users. During the beta the maker of Amili and the AI agents he runs on Claude by Anthropic read along; every read is logged, users are labelled with codes, and you can export or delete everything. It never spends money and sends nothing as you without your yes for that exact message.

Price. Free during the beta; no public price. Planned tiers are a limited free plan, a fixed monthly Basic and a Full plan with third-party accounts, and the facts page says you see any price before paying anything.

Nothing remembers everything

Three reasons, none of them temporary.

Capture is the bottleneck, and total capture left the market. The one category that captured everything was discontinued by its new owner within days of acquisition. Nothing comparable is on sale today.

Selection is the feature. Chat memory works because it throws most things away. A memory that kept every sentence would be as useless as an unsearched inbox. The price is that the AI decides, and sometimes decides wrong.

Context windows end. Within one conversation Claude works from up to 200K or 1M tokens depending on the model, then summarises, per Anthropic's context window article. Long projects outgrow a single chat.

So: choose the kind that matches the thing you lose. Decisions made in chats, turn on chat memory and audit it monthly. Research, use a note tool and a capture habit. Small commitments made out loud, use a say-it-once assistant or a plain task list. Expect to be the one who decides what goes in.

Questions people ask

Is there an AI that remembers all my conversations?

Chat assistants remember a profile drawn from your conversations and, in ChatGPT and Claude, can search past chats on request. None replays every conversation into every new one; the context window would not hold it.

What happened to Limitless and Rewind?

Meta acquired Limitless. The Pendant stopped selling on 5 December 2025, app recording ended, and Rewind disabled all capture on 19 December 2025. Existing customers keep access to old recordings through 2026 on a free plan, except in regions where service ended.

Which AI has the best persistent memory?

It depends on the input. For things you type in chat, Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini are comparable and all editable. For things you write down, Obsidian keeps them on your disk and Notion or Mem keep them searchable. For things you want turned into tasks, a say-it-once assistant fits. We do not rank them because they are not solving the same problem.

Is AI memory private?

Each vendor publishes its own rules; the pages linked above are the ones to read. Common to all: you can view and delete what is stored, training is a separate setting, and incognito or temporary modes exist. Human review and retention differ, and Google documents those in the most detail.
